About Us

Thorpe Greenways School was built in 1934 and currently houses a separate Infant and Junior school. The Infant school has four classes in each year group, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, with 30 pupils in each class. The school accommodates a maximum of 360 pupils on roll. The Infant school is located in very pleasant grounds with 12 classes in total.
The school has a hall which is used for school assembly, PE sessions, singing, performances, meetings, after school clubs and of course, the service of school meals. The Infant school has a purpose built ICT suite and shares the use of the on-site swimming pool with the Junior school.
The Infant school enjoys an excellent reputation within the community which it serves, being popular and oversubscribed. The school has an excellent academic record achieving consistently high results in the statutory National Curriculum end of Key Stage 1 Tests and achieves high grades in comparison to all schools nationally and locally (see National Curriculum SATs comparative data provided).
The school provides a broad and balanced creative curriculum for pupils. The children attain high standards of achievement in all subject areas. The Infant School has been recognised nationally, for the exceptionally high standard of pupil’s work in the fields of creative arts and sport. This has lead to the school being awarded Artsmark Gold Status from the National Art Council of Great Britain. The school has a strong tradition of encouraging pupils’ involvement in a wide variety of sporting opportunities. The children participate in local sporting events, competing against other local schools. The Infant school has been the re-awarded the P.E Active Mark Award by the DCSF, in recognition of outstanding practice in developing pupil’s access to sport and P.E.
The Infant School has a strong focus on promoting healthy lifestyles, which has led to the school’s work being recognised nationally. The school has been awarded Healthy Schools status by the awarding Government Body responsible for promoting Health and wellbeing in schools. The I.C.T. is fully integrated into the school curriculum, with children having access to a bank of state-of-the-art computers, which are networked throughout the school, linked to the internet via Broadband. Each class has an interactive whiteboard and children develop their understanding of applications related to I.C.T., both in the classroom and in the school’s purpose built I.C.T. suite. Pupils’ attainment levels in I.C.T. were recognised by Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI), as being well above national average. In January 2007, the Infant School received an excellent OFSTED report.
The school has established excellent links within the local community and beyond. The Infant School are twinned with a school in Rochester, Kent and Nice in France. The children send letters and communicate with the other schools via email, which enhances the children’s understanding of the wider community, both, local, national and global. The school has a Modern Foreign Language Co-ordinator who runs a French after school club. The school regularly holds themed weeks in French, Spanish, Chinese New Year and celebrates worldwide festivals.
The Infant school has a warm welcoming approach and is proud of its many achievements to date. Our children are well behaved and respond well to the responsibilities given to them during the course of school life. The school has a calm harmonious and industrious atmosphere where children are encouraged to fulfil their potential and to take an active part in the life and work of the school. The Infant school has a School Council and Buddy friendship system used during play and lunch times.
The staff and Governing Body work hard as a team to provide an excellent education for the children in our care within the framework of a broad and balanced creative curriculum, taught within a stimulating teaching and learning environment, where each individual child can flourish.
We value highly our liaison with parents and welcome your involvement in the education of your child and in the life of the school in general. Numerous events are held throughout the year, to which parents are invited to attend. These include Harvest Festival, Christmas and Summer concerts, Music and Dance Festivals, Book Fairs,
The school has an active Parents Association (FOTs), which organise numerous events throughout the year. These include, family disco’s, quiz nights, ladies pamper evenings, a black tie summer ball, inflatable fun-days, Christmas bazaar’s and Summer Fayre’s. All parents are automatically members of FOTS and you may wish to consider supporting the work of the Parents Association during your child’s time at Thorpe Greenways Infant School.
Parent / teacher open evenings are held in the Autumn and Spring Terms and a Celebration Open evening is held in the Summer term, which the whole school community is invited to attend.
